Becoming a Tree

Gary’s Last Wish

When Gary made his last wish to become a tree, his wife, Bonnie, faced a challenge: she wanted to honor his unique request but didn’t know how to begin. Where could the family plant a tree that would stand the test of time? Their backyard was unsuitable for such a meaningful tribute, especially since they had no plans to remain in their current home indefinitely.

Finding A Better Place

Bonnie’s search for a fitting location was frustrating. Traditional options like burying an urn or planting a sapling with Gary’s ashes felt limiting. Their local Parks and Recreation Department was not accommodating, and the notion of finding the right place seemed overwhelming. How could she ensure Gary’s last wish would be honored?

Then Bonnie discovered Better Place Forests Flagstaff. Gary and Bonnie went to college in Flagstaff, lived in Flagstaff, and grew up camping near Flagstaff, so she thought it was the perfect resting place for Gary.

“Before we started dating Gary would always go out to Hart Prairie Road and camp with his buddies where the Flagstaff Memorial Forest is today—it was meant to be.” -Bonnie W., Better Place Forests Flagstaff, Arizona

Gary’s Memorial Tree

Bonnie chose a Ponderosa Pine Memorial Tree because its fragrance reminded her of their time in Flagstaff. She not only chose the Memorial Tree for Gary, but for herself and their son Nicolas to share. By bundling all their end-of-life needs into one decision, Bonnie saved time and ensured peace of mind for their family.

Gary’s death was sudden, and with so many details that needed to happen very fast, it was important that the family plan ahead for both Bonnie and Nicolas so they could rest easy knowing loved ones wouldn’t have to face difficult decisions in the future. Her other son, Austin and his wife, Malieke may join them at their Memorial Tree or choose their own. They are taking the next step in end of life planning now to give their loved ones the ultimate gift—peace of mind.

The Forest Memorial

The entire family gathered for Gary’s Forest Memorial. “They were amazed,” Bonnie said. “The forest and ceremony were beautiful and stunning.” The ceremony included a gentle explanation of life’s cycles to their autistic son, Nicolas, using a butterfly chrysalis as a metaphor for transformation. It was a poignant way to explain life and death.

“I don’t really know if Nicolas knew it was Gary’s ashes,” Bonnie shared, “but he knew to sprinkle the seeds and water them.”

“It’s such a beautiful place. I love knowing that his ashes are spread there. I feel lucky that we found this forest and this tree.” -Bonnie W., Better Place Forests Flagstaff, Arizona

Memories Live On

The Forest Memorial brought Bonnie the closure she needed. “It’s such a beautiful place. I love knowing that his ashes are spread there,” shares Bonnie. “I feel lucky that we found this forest and this tree.”

By choosing Better Place Forests, Bonnie ensured Gary’s last wish was honored with dignity and love. By taking the time to plan ahead for herself and Nicholas, Bonnie ensured that her family won’t face difficult decisions later. With one decision she easily bundled all of their needs—saving time while creating a lasting, meaningful tribute. Give your loved ones the ultimate gift—peace of mind. Plan today to protect tomorrow.
